Gutenberg's Printing Press: Was it Revolutionary?
Saturday, June 27, 2026 | 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM *FREE
NNMC El Rito Campus, Cutting Hall
The 42-line Gutenberg Bible, printed in Mainz in 1453, is often cited as a revolutionary
moment in the history of communication. But did it immediately eclipse the manuscript
book culture of the Middle Ages? And what lessons might we learn from this history
today as we live through a "Digital Revolution" that some argue will make print obsolete?
This talk will study examples of manuscript and printed books with religious content
from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance to explore these questions.
Speaker: Jeff Ravel, Professor Emeritus of History at MIT. Co-founder of the Beaver Press
letterpress print shop at MIT and current volunteer at the Center for the Book, Special
Collections, Albuquerque Public Library.
